"Have mercy on us and help us, if you can.” “What do you mean, ‘If I can’?” Jesus asked. “Anything is possible if a person believes.” The father instantly cried out, “I do believe, but help me overcome my unbelief!” - Mark 9:22-25
In this Bible story, Jesus is approached by a father who has a son who is gripped by an evil spirit. He comes to Jesus out of desperation, asking him to heal the boy "if he can." Jesus assures the father than he, Jesus, can indeed do anything by faith. The father immediately recognizes his lack of faith, and begs Jesus to give him more.
That's how it is for those of us in recovery. After we admit our powerlessness in Step One, we are left in a dangerous and hopeless state, casting about for anything that might help relieve our problem. Step Two is our first grab at the life-preserver of Jesus. We don't have to believe all at once, but recognizing our need for and lack of faith opens the door for Jesus to grow our faith. We will need to eventually turn our wills and lives over to him in Step 3, but first we begin to trust that he is the one that can restore our sanity. Step Two is the bridge from hopelessness to hope. God promises us what will happen next:
But if from there you seek the Lord your God, you will find him if you seek him with all your heart and with all your soul. - Deuteronomy 4:29
